The electric light bulb did not come from the continuous improvement of candles – Oren Harari

We love that quote!

Thanks Brian Solis for bringing it to our attention, and don’t miss the video in his post.

In the Agile and Lean universe, when we hear “continuous improvement”, it usually translates to iterations and increments inside a release plan. But can you imagine what the candle-to-lightbulb product roadmap would have looked like? 😊

Innovation isn’t always about doing things better. Sometimes, it’s about doing things differently. Real breakthroughs rarely come from perfecting the past. They come from stepping into the unknown with curiosity and courage.

So what is the essence of innovation?
🧠 Asking “what if?” when no one else does
🔥 Embracing discomfort instead of avoiding it
🎯 Creating space for exploration, even when it might not pay off
🚀 Fostering a risk-taking culture that rewards bold thinking over safe repetition

Whatever your context, progress often begins when we stop polishing what is and start imagining what could be.

👉 The future isn’t shaped by flawless plans. It’s built by curious people who are willing to try, fall, learn, and try again.

Which reminds me of another great quote, this one from Mike Tyson: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”. But that’s another story…

Where would curiosity take you if you stopped using a map?
